There are 267,570 Swedish islands. Few of them, if any, have as strong an attraction as Stora Karlsö. Peace has been shining over the island since the 1880s. You can understand why as soon as you step ashore. The island is a haven for tens of thousands of birds that return to the bird mountains every spring. A rarely seen wealth of orchids blooms here. Here are barren heaths, long pebble beaches and one of the country's most beautifully situated lighthouses. The island is easily accessible off the west coast of Gotland, but at the same time is so different that it feels exotic. Not to mention paradisiacal. Photographer Roine Magnusson and authors Mats and Åsa Ottosson talk about a very special place and at the same time draw attention to the fact that it is exactly a hundred years since nature photography pioneer Bengt Berg depicted the island.
